The Picture Exercise: A Rhino Workshop

For 20 years, Beau O’Reilly has used “the picture exercise” as a writing prompt in his teaching, asking students to imagine written worlds beginning in curated visual images in the classroom space. Beau has changed the exercise over the years, but he first learned it from Matthew Goulish, who learned it from Cuban-American playwright Maria Irene Fornés. Fornés died in late 2018, and to honor her at this year’s Rhino, Beau invites you to come to Prop on the morning of Saturday, February 2 and make a play, using the picture exercise. Come back at the end of the month and we will read from everyone’s writings, together. No tickets needed — we will pass the hat. All are welcome.
