FACILITY THEATRE

(1138 N CALIFORNIA AVE)

Tending to the M{other}

Tending to the M{other} is a dance theater performance about the joys and hardships of caregiving. What began as a collaboration between two new mothers seeking connection and respite has evolved into a community project documenting this universal and transformative experience.

We have all cared for others. We have all been cared for by others. We wonder: how can radical love and caring be a roadmap for a more interconnected world?

Have you rocked someone to sleep?

Has someone cried out for you?

Have you helped someone get dressed?

Has someone you love thrown a tantrum?

Do you worry that your loved ones need you to feed them?

Do you have dishes to wash?

Do you have to pack bags and unpack bags and pack bags and...?

This performance is for you!

Accessibility Information

As caregivers, we recognize that each member of our audience has unique needs and we seek to welcome and accommodate attendees to the best of our ability. That said, we recognize it is not possible to be fully accessible to everyone. We are passionate about creating an audience experience that is welcoming to various bodies and experiences, including young people, who are part of our lives and deserve to witness the labor and creativity of their loving adults.

Physical access and seating

The main entrance to the Facility Theater on California Ave is wheelchair accessible. Bathrooms are wheelchair accessible and all gender, although there is not a changing table. The theater space is wheelchair accessible and includes chair and floor seating.

Parking and transportation

Free street parking is available outside the theater on the east side of California and paid meter parking is available on the west side of the street. The Facility is one block from bus stops for California (94) and Division (70) buses. The nearest L stop is the Division blue line.

Lighting, sound, and sensory information

Lighting in the theater will be dark, with some illuminated areas onstage and within the audience. There are no strobe flashing lights or fog used during the performance. There are some high pitched noises about 20 minutes into the piece.

Children

Tending to the M{other} is a family friendly event, although no childcare will be provided. Chaperoned children of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend and there will be child friendly activities available throughout the performance.

Audience norms

Although there are quiet and intimate moments within the performance, audience members are welcome to come and go as needed. Vocalizations and noises produced by audience members across the age continuum are completely acceptable and not considered distracting to the performers.

Performance content and audience interaction

The show runs approximately 45 minutes in length and includes live music, dance, and spoken text. Some, but not all, spoken text is captioned. Audience interaction is part of the performance and individuals may be approached by performers. If you do not wish to interact, we encourage you to put your hand up in the “stop” position if you are approached. We will offer snacks which include nut free, vegan and gluten free options.

Masking

Masks are optional for this event and available at the door. Although not required, attendees are encouraged and welcome to mask at their own discretion.

Ticket pricing

Tickets to the show are sliding scale, $10-25. If you wish to attend and the ticket price is a barrier, please contact us.

As with any new role or responsibility, incorporating access elements is a work in progress. We aim to add additional modes of access, such as open audio description of the movement, into future performances for a more integrated sensory meditation on caregiving. We welcome your feedback about what would make you feel more cared for at future performances. @auroratabar @xtine333 @jess_baldissero @neverbrunch
