Foundling

A Puppet Play by Ylfa Lund Muindi

In 1944, a troll showed mercy to a human child and left him wailing outside an Arctic hospital. The child was then carried across the world to an American timber town, and in forty-two years, this orphan would find himself walking away from another wailing baby in another hospital. Through shadow puppetry and live, improvised electronics, experience the fierce, terrifying love of the troll who left his forest to keep watch over this little family of one, then two, and then one again.

Ylfa Lund Muindi is a puppeteer living and working as a gardener in Chicago. She is inspired by the small pockets of safety where life may thrive: the shade of a Mother Tree, the lee in the rocky hillside, the hummingbird nest lined with spidersilk. Her work probes the bonds we form with plants, animals, rocks, rivers, and monsters (consciously or unconsciously), in search of new means of making sense of this world and the other-worldly.
